Barbara M. Berk’s suspended sculpture “No Loose Ends” has been selected for the Sausalito Center for the Arts Open at the Sausalito Center for the Arts in Sausalito, CA.  

Jurors Hilary Magowan, Associate Director of Exhibitions, Legion of Honor; Craig Coss, award-wining San Francisco Bay Area fine artist, illustrator, and storyteller; and Susan Snyder, co-founder of Caldwell Snyder Gallery in San Francisco, Montecito and St. Helena, reviewed 1,482 pieces of art submitted by 590 artists to create this inaugural exhibition. 

Featuring 271 pieces of art by 197 artists, the SCA Open “stands as one of the largest and most dynamic showcases of creative talent in the Bay Area,” says Executive Director Shiva Pakdel.  “Spanning painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media and digital art, …[the juried exhibition] reflects the vitality and diversity of today’s artistic community.  Each submission represents a unique voice, a singular vision, and together they form a sweeping portrait of creativity at this moment in time.”

Barbara M. Berk’s sculpture embodies the interplay of metal with traditional fiber technologies and structures.  Drawing on the sewing she loved as a girl and the metalsmithing skills she learned as an adult, she uses 16^th century stitches to make bobbin lace by hand with stainless steel and bronze wire.  She then curves, loops, twists, interweaves, layers, sews, embroiders, filigrees, welds and polishes her flat lace fabric into 3-dimensional forms, that become wall-mounted, ceiling-suspended and pedestal-supported sculptures. 

The Sausalito Center for the Arts occupies the former Bank of America Building, which has been transformed into a modular venue that can be configured for a variety of artistic and community needs. Opened in early 2023, the SCA is creating a vibrant and active arts association that supports a variety of artistic programs for artists, residents, and visitors to Sausalito.  Its programs are meant to build connections, create dialogue, and transform the community through understanding, inclusion and acceptance.

The Sausalito Center for the Arts Open runs from October 17 through November 16, 2025.  An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday October 25, 2025 from 5 – 7pm.   A Closing Reception will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2025 from 3 – 5pm.  The SCA is located at 750 Bridgeway, Sausalito and is open Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm.
