Barbara M. Berk’s pedestal-supported sculpture “Around and Around” has been selected for the 104th Anniversary Exhibition at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto, CA.
Juror Veronica Roberts, John and Jill Freidenrich Director of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, selected over 200 works of art, both 2- and 3-dimensional, created by 200 artists. Presented salon-style, the exhibition features an extraordinary range of voices, from bold new visions to time-honored traditions, reflecting the diversity and vitality that define PAL today.
Barbara M. Berk’s sculpture embodies the interplay of metal with traditional fiber technologies and structures. Drawing on the sewing she loved as a girl and the metalsmithing skills she learned as an adult, she uses 16th century stitches to make bobbin lace by hand. She then curves, loops, twists, interweaves, layers, sews, embroiders, filigrees, welds and polishes her flat stainless steel or phosphor bronze fabric into 3-dimensional forms, that become wall-mounted, ceiling- suspended and pedestal-supported sculptures.
The Pacific Art League is “dedicated to the great tradition of promoting art, training emerging artists and enriching lives in the San Francisco Peninsula.
