Lace One: The Volcanologist’s Heliocoidal Eddy

Free-standing Sculpture
Stainless Steel – Bobbin Lace
15” H x 22” W x 12” D

Lace One was simply called “Lace One” when I completed it.  Months later a visitor to the studio was very excited by the arrangement of the stainless steel curls and informed me that they represent the path that smoke takes as it comes out the top of a volcano and is caught by the wind.  My visitor, a volcanologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, explained that this flowing path is a “heliocoidal eddy”.
