Lace Three: It’s All Because of Wayne

Hanging or Free-standing Sculpture
Stainless Steel and Phosphor Bronze – Bobbin Lace
9” H x 12” W x 12” D

When I started Lace Three, I wanted to see the impact, if any, of one bronze edge on a ribbon of stainless steel lace. The single bronze edge gives the eye a thin line to follow, in addition to the wide flat plane.  But once the piece was complete, I realized that the arrangements of the loose wire ends, combined with the overall form,  are reminiscent of a hat.  Lace Three had inadvertently become a tribute to my friend and colleague, Wayne Wichern, a marvelous milliner and the reason that I have a studio at the Peninsula Museum of Art.
