Sculpture and Assemblage – An Exploration

Marin Society of Artists, San Rafael, CA

March 7 – 30, 2024

Barbara M. Berk’s pedestal-supported sculpture “Interiors” has been selected for Sculpture and Assemblage – An Exploration, at the Marin Society of Artists, San Rafael, CA.

Juried by Jeff Owen, nationally recognized abstract metal sculptor, the exhibition features contemporary sculpture and assemblage by 36 artists working in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and explores a range of materials and styles.

Barbara M. Berk’s sculpture embodies the interplay of metal with traditional fiber techniques.  She uses 16th century stitches to make bobbin lace, by hand, and then curves, loops, twists, interweaves, layers, sews, embroiders, welds and polishes the flat lace “fabric” into 3-dimensional forms.

Berk created “Interiors” with phosphor bronze wire.  Using 12 strands of twisted wire and Dieppe Ground stitch she made a ribbon of lace 3” wide x 110” long.  She curled the ribbon and stitched it together with wire to maintain the form.  Short wire ends were stitched to the lace, creating sprays of wire centered by rosettes, inside the spherical form.
