Barbara M. Berk has been invited to participate in Finding the Form: Bay Area Sculpture, the first sculpture exhibition at the new Sausalito Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA.

Thirty six artists, “each weav[…e] unique narratives through a diverse array of materials and techniques. From the timeless art of ceramics, where the intimacy of clay captures the essence of the handmade, to the simple yet intricate wood that speaks of nature’s embrace and impermanence of time and its traces, to the alchemy of metalsmithing where steel and bronze are expanding into shapes that defy expectations and gravity itself, each piece, a story in itself, becomes a vessel of expression through form.”

Barbara M. Berk explores the interplay of metal with traditional fiber techniques. She created the “Petite French Knot” with stainless steel wire, using a 16th century bobbin lace stitch. With 16 threads she made a square of lace that forms the foundation of the wall-mounted sculpture.  Playing with the long loose wire threads, she embroidered and embellished the surface of the lace.  Berk then sewed the threads and the lace together with wire to establish the 3-dimensional form.

The Sausalito Center for the Arts occupies the former Bank of America Building, which has been transformed into a modular venue that can be configured for a variety of artistic and community needs. Opened in early 2023, the SCA is creating a vibrant and active arts association that supports a variety of artistic programs for artists, residents, and visitors to Sausalito.

Finding the Form: Bay Area Sculpture runs from September 15 through October 8, 2023. The SCA is located at 750 Bridgeway, Sausalito and is open Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm.
