Phosphor Bronze – Soumak
4” H x 7” W x 3” D
I wanted to weave some bronze to determine the best combination of round wire diameters for warp and weft, and to determine my fingers’ willingness to work with this harder metal. I set up the test sample to include spreading the warps and inserting new wires to create additional woven “arms”. The test also included forming the woven bronze to determine what could be worked with fingers and mandrels and pliers, and what would require a hammer. It was my friend and colleague Michael Kesselman at the Museum Studios who saw “waves” and encouraged me to weld the ends and turn the test sample into a finished piece.
